We have lots of coyotes around. Every other night I can here them calling and yipping. According to some of the neighbors, there is a group of dens in the hills and pastures between us and the highway two miles away. The coyotes will come up to our fence line. Theyre surely checking out the horses and perhaps hoping to catch one of the cats away from the shed. In fresh snow I like to follow the tracks they leave as they chase mice.

There’s a phrase that’s been on my mind for several months. I’ve tried googling it. I’ve scoured the blogs and article databases. I feel somewhat confident (with a definite maybe) that it’s a term I’ve made up. Surely, some one reading this can point my ego in the right direction and show me that some one else deserves the credit. I’m bothered by the trend I see we are making toward a “cafeteria society”.

The days must be getting shorter. An hour can no longer be an “hour” long. I’ve heard many adults complain about this effect. I must admit, that I was aware of it even as a child. Time was inconceivable and only marked by significant events such birthday parties and Christmas mornings. My university years were definitely shorter than my high school years. Now, they blend together.

It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I get a shocked expression from my wife (and anyone willing to listen ) when I mention my idea. I have no shame in this regard to my family’s opinions. If I received a phone call, right at this moment, that I could travel into space, even aboard a hastily equipped space shuttle, even if I had to leave Vermilion right away to begin training, I wouldn’t hesitate. I would definitely go.

The best part about spring is getting to play in the water. I spent a good part of the afternoon last weekend wandering around the yard splashing through puddles and squishing in the mud. My children wandered around with me. Or they did until one of them got a boot stuck and stood screaming with a white sock held dangling above a lone boot deep in some muck. Another one, my son, broke through ice and found himself standing in water up to his knees. I was left alone out in the wilderness.

It is said to be golden. I am beginning to understand why. Basic economics suggests that the scarcity of a commodity ensures that it will be valuable. Of course, there has to be a demand for the stuff. So it is a rare thing and people want it. At least, they say they want it. I’ve tried to find it at various times.
