I been at the wrong end of a phone. I’ve mailed out the applications. I’ve sat in many interviews. I’ve waited at a phone that continued not to ring with no job offer in sight.
So, I feel a lot of empathy for a recent news-worthy individual who has found himself out of his old position. He’s looking for some self-respect. He needs a new identity. He’s after something to do – to be a part of something again.
First is the resume. This can be difficult for our friend. He has done the same thing for most of his existence. A little padding might be called for. He’s in a successful partnership. His influence, although small, is in the top ten. And his features hint at some surprising attributes if anyone took the time to really get to know him.
An interview is in the works. He’s certainly nervous. How can he present himself best? What sort of questions will they ask? What will they expect of him? Unfortunately, our friend is going to be waiting a long time for his interview. A quick check of the internet gives the date to be sometime in July of 2015. In the meantime judgement has been passed. Pluto is no longer a planet.
It happened this summer. The problem was that too many large objects were being found. Astronomers weren’t ready to promote these objects to the prime office space that planets get. So the debate began. I’m not sure how a group of space geeks can keep this kind of argument from getting out of control but they did end up in agreement. They tried to keep it simple. A planet must orbit the Sun. (Pluto does) It must be round. (Pluto is) It has to keep its orbit clear.
And this is Pluto’s small indisgression. You may recall that Pluto’s path crosses Neptune’s. Since Pluto could not clear out the big blue bully it loses a job it held since it was discovered in 1930. Pluto is a victim of solar system downsizing. Our solar economy does not seem to want to support 9 planets.
Chin up. He could find happiness as a famous cometary object. But he has some major competition from Halley. And he doesn’t have a pretty tail either. Maybe he will end up doing what so many have done when they are looking for work. He just might move to Alberta.
